What Is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial Release is a manual technique that involves applying gentle and sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Myofascial Release is an integrative therapy based on massage work and gentle stretching designed to warm and loosen the muscles. Through trauma, poor posture or repetitive motion, restrictions can form in the fascia (connective tissue) causing pressure on nerves, blood vessels, muscles, joints, and organs.

Many patients seek this therapy after losing flexibility or function following an injury or if experiencing ongoing back, shoulder, hip, or virtually pain in any area containing soft tissue.

How is Myofascial Release performed?

By applying static, prolonged pressure to the restricted tissue, tension is released from the fibrous bands of the muscles, bones, nerves, and joints. This integrative approach will unblock any scar tissue or tension due to injury in the muscles and surrounding tissues.

A typical Myofascial Release treatment lasts an hour. Patients often rave about the total release of body tension they experience.

Myofascial Release can be quite intense, especially in the case of muscles which are holding a great deal of tension and stress. After the session, some clients experience slight stiffness and soreness, which will usually vanish over the next few days, leaving behind a sense of well-being.

Benefits of Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release can be highly beneficial for patients with muscle-associated health issues, Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and back pain.

Some doctors prescribe this more holistic approach in conjunction with other forms of therapy to give patients a greater range of options. Myofascial therapy can also enhance or assist other treatments to increase their effectiveness such as manipulation, physical therapy, or occupational therapy; it can also improve skeletal and muscular alignment, or help athletes achieve better alignment prior to sports competitions.

By targeting specific areas of the fascial system, Myofascial Release can help prepare patients for more aggressive forms of strengthening, or provide pain relief for patients with restricted flexibility and movement, thus allowing patients to return to normal movement and greater function.
